Balancing Authority and Servanthood

The Bible teaches us that authority and servanthood are two sides of the same coin. We are called to be both leaders and servants, and to balance the two in our lives.

I. What Does the Bible Say About Authority and Servanthood?

The Bible is clear that authority and servanthood are both important. In Matthew 20:25-28, Jesus says, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. It shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be your slave.”

Jesus is teaching us that authority and servanthood are not mutually exclusive. We are called to be both leaders and servants. We are to use our authority to serve others, not to lord it over them.

In Romans 13:1-2, Paul writes, “Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment.”

Paul is teaching us that we are to be subject to the authorities that God has appointed. We are to respect and obey those in authority over us.

II. How Can We Balance Authority and Servanthood?

Balancing authority and servanthood can be difficult, but it is possible. Here are some tips for balancing the two:

1. Respect those in authority over you.

We are to respect and obey those in authority over us. This means that we should not only obey their commands, but also show them respect and honor.

2. Serve those in authority over you.

We are to serve those in authority over us. This means that we should look for ways to help them and make their lives easier.

3. Lead with humility.

When we are in positions of authority, we are to lead with humility. We should not use our authority to lord it over others, but to serve them.

4. Follow with humility.

When we are in positions of servanthood, we are to follow with humility. We should not be resentful or rebellious, but obedient and respectful.

5. Pray for wisdom.
