The verse opens with the vav-consecutive narrative marker vayomer {וַיֹּאמֶר֩ | vay-yo-ʾmer} ‘and he said,’ introducing direct speech by Eliyahu {אֵלִיָּ֨הוּ | ʾē-lî-yā-hû}.
