Exegesis

The relative clause ’asher be’eiro hayoshvim et Navot {אֲשֶׁר בְּעִירוֹ הַיֹּשְׁבִים אֶת־נָבֹת | ’a-šer bə-’i-yo ha-yosh-vim ’et-nā-vot} ‘who in his city the dwellers with Naboth’ specifies which community members were addressed. The direct object marker et underscores the definiteness of Naboth as the object. The sequence of vav-consecutives underscores the calculated nature of Jezebel’s deception.
