Exegesis

The shift in subject at vayikkach {וַיִּקַּח | wayyiqqāḥ} introduces the people of the land (am-haaretz {עַם־הָאָרֶץ | ʿam-hā’āreṣ}) taking Jehoahaz ben Yoshiyahu and announcing succession through vayimshchu {וַיִּמְשְׁחוּ | wayyimšəḥû} “and they anointed him” and vayamlikhu {וַיַּמְלִ֥יכוּ | wayyamməlîḵû} “and they made him king,” with tachat aviv {תַּחַת אָבִיו | taḥat ’āḇîyw} marking “in place of his father.”
