   and to you will be driven out from men and with the beasts of the field will be your dwelling place and grass like oxen for you will be made to eat and with the dew of the heavens for you will be drenched and seven periods will pass over you until that you know rules the Most High in the kingdom of men and to whom wills gives it

Exegesis

What must be learned is expressed in two coordinated di-clauses: di shallit illaya bemalkut anasha {דִּי שַׁלִּט עִלַּיָּא בְּמַלְכוּת אֲנָשָׁא | dî šal-lîṭ ʿil-lay-yāʾ bə-mal-kût ʾă-nā-šāʾ} “that the Most High is ruling in the kingdom of mankind,” where shallit is a participle conveying ongoing sovereignty, and ûlman-di yitsbe yitninnah {וּלְמַן־דִּי יִצְבֵּא יִתְּנִנַּהּ | ûl-man-dî yiṣ-bê yit-ti-nin-nāh} “and to whomever He wills He gives it,” where the relative phrase ləman-di “to whomever” plus the verbs “He wills / He gives” stresses God’s free, unconditioned bestowal of royal authority. In English, the implicit subject in the impersonal plurals and third person verbs must be made explicit as “they” and “He” while preserving the two linked “that” clauses to keep the theological focus on the Most High’s ongoing and discretionary rule over human kingdoms.
