17. Formal Translation And in every province and every city, wherever the king’s word and his decree reached, there was joy and gladness for the Jews, a feast and a good day, and many of the people of the land became Jews, for the fear of the Jews had fallen upon them. |
17. Dynamic Translation Throughout the empire—in each province and each city—wherever the king’s decree arrived, the Jews celebrated with joy and gladness, with feasting on a good day. Many among the people of the land identified themselves as Jews because the fear of the Jews had fallen upon them. |
