Exegesis
The verse begins with vayhi {וַיְהִי | wə-yə-hî} ‘and it was’, a vav-consecutive Qal imperfect marking narrative progression, followed by kihiksha {כִּֽי־הִקְשָׁ֣ה | kî-hik-šâ} ‘when he hardened’, a Hifil perfect that introduces Pharaoh’s stubborn stance.

In context — Exodus 13:15
And it came to pass, when Pharaoh was stubborn about sending us away, that the LORD killed every firstborn in the land of Egypt, both the firstborn of man and the firstborn of animals. Therefore I sacrifice to the LORD every male that opens the womb, but I redeem every firstborn of my sons.
