Exegesis
A second vayomer marks divine response, where the Hiphil imperfect ashkhit {אַשְׁחִית | ʾaš-ḥîṯ} ‘I will destroy’ in the motivation clause baavur ha-esrim {בַּעֲבוּר הָעֶשְׂרִים | ba-ʿă-vūr hā-ʿeś-rîm} ‘for the sake of the twenty’ underscores God’s restrained judgment out of mercy.
In context — Genesis 18:31
And he said, “Now, please, I have taken it upon myself to speak to the Lord . Perhaps twenty will be found there.” And He said, “I will not destroy for the sake of the twenty.”
