Exegesis

The verse opens with the coordinated nominal clause vechol siach hasadeh terem yihyeh baarets {וְכֹל שִׂיחַ הַשָּׂדֶה טֶרֶם יִהְיֶה בָאָרֶץ | wə-ḵōl śî-aḥ haś-śā-ḏeh ṭe-rem yih-yeh bā-ʾā-reṣ}, where the adverb terem {טֶרֶם | ṭe-rem} ‘not yet, before’ governs the imperfect yihyeh {יִהְיֶה | yih-yeh} to describe a past state that was still unrealized (“was not yet”).

A parallel clause follows, vechol-esev hasadeh terem yitsmach {וְכָל־עֵשֶׂב הַשָּׂדֶה טֶרֶם יִצְמָח | wə-ḵol-ʿē-śeḇ haś-śā-ḏeh ṭe-rem yiṣ-maḥ}, with the same adverb–imperfect pairing, now with the verb yitsmach {יִצְמָח | yiṣ-maḥ} ‘sprout, grow’, creating a balanced structure that stresses the total absence of field vegetation.

In contextGenesis 2:5

And every shrub of the field was not yet on the earth, and every plant of the field had not yet sprouted, for the LORD God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was no man to cultivate the ground .
