The proverb begins with a nominal subject, tohelet memushakhah {תּוֹחֶ֣לֶת מְ֭מֻשָּׁכָה | tô-che-let mə-mû-sha-kha} ‘delayed hope,’ followed by the predicate machalah-lev {מַחֲלָה־לֵ֑ב | ma-ḥă-lāh-lev} ‘heart sickness.’ The prefixed waw at וְעֵץ introduces an adversative turn.
