The northern kingdom of Israel was conquered by the Assyrians in 722 BC, and the people were taken into exile. The southern kingdom of Judah was conquered by the Babylonians in 586 BC, and the people were taken into exile in Babylon. This exile lasted for 70 years, and during this time the Israelites were allowed to practice their religion and to keep their culture alive.
At the end of the exile, the Israelites were allowed to return to their homeland. This event is known as the Return from Exile, and it is celebrated in the Bible as a time of joy and redemption. The prophet Ezra led the people in a ceremony of rededication to God, and the people renewed their covenant with God.
