1 Kings 14:8ExegesisTAB

1 Kings 14 : 8 Kingdom | Obedience | Integrity
8. Linguistic Exegesis
The verse opens with a vav-consecutive prefixed verb va’eqra {וָאֶקְרַ֤ע | wāʾeqraʾ} ‘and I tore,’ immediately followed by the direct object marker et-hamamlāḵāh {אֶת־הַמַּמְלָכָה֙ | ʾet hammamlāḵā}, highlighting the removal of the kingdom. A parallel sequence in wāʾetnēhā {וָאֶתְּנֶ֖הָ | wāʾetnēhā} ‘and I gave it’ ties together divine actions in narrative succession. The negative clause wə-lōhāyītā {וְלֹֽא־הָיִ֜יתָ | wə-lōhāyītā} creates a sharp contrast between the addressee and David. Two relative clauses introduced by ʾăšer šāmar {אֲשֶׁר֩ שָׁמַ֨ר | ʾăšer šāmar} ‘who kept’ and waʾăšer hālaḵ {וַאֲשֶׁר־הָלַ֤ךְ | waʾăšer hālaḵ} ‘and who walked’ form a chiastic parallelism that underscores covenant fidelity. The infinitive laʿăśōt {לַעֲשׂ֕וֹת | laʿăśōt} ‘to do’ with the adverb raq {רַ֖ק | raq} ‘only’ expresses purpose and exclusivity, reinforcing David’s wholehearted devotion (bəḵōl ləḇāḇô {בְּכָל־לְבָב֔וֹ | bəḵōl ləḇāḇô}). In English, the original VSO order is rendered into SVO for readability while retaining the sequence of divine actions.
