1 Kings 15:28ExegesisTAB

1 Kings 15 : 28 Regicide | Succession | Kingship
28. Linguistic Exegesis
The verse opens with vayemitehu {וַיְּמִתֵ֣הוּ | va-yə-mi-ṯē-hû} ‘and he killed him,’ employing a vav-consecutive prefixed to a Hiphil imperfect to advance the narrative. It proceeds with baasha {בַעְשָׁ֔א | ba-ʿā-shāʾ} ‘Baasha,’ the agent of the action. The temporal construct bishnat shalosh leasa {בִּשְׁנַ֣ת שָׁלֹ֔שׁ לְאָסָ֖א | bi-šnat šā-lōš lə-ˈă-sāʾ} ‘in the third year of Asa’ specifies regnal dating. The appositional title melek yehudah {מֶ֣לֶךְ יְהוּדָ֑ה | mē-leḵ yə-hū-ḏāh} ‘king of Judah’ identifies the deceased’s office. The narrative resumes with vayimlokh {וַיִּמְלֹ֖ךְ | va-yim-lōḵ} ‘and he reigned,’ another vav-consecutive with a Qal imperfect, followed by tahtav {תַּחְתָּֽיו | taḥ-tāw} ‘in his place,’ marking the succession of authority. The original VSO order is rendered into English SVO for clarity while preserving temporal and causal relationships.
