1 Kings 16:4ExegesisTAB

1 Kings 16 : 4 Judgment | Dishonor | Exposure
4. Linguistic Exegesis
The Hebrew construct chain hamet levaʿashah {הַמֵּ֤ת לְבַעְשָׁא֙ | ha-mēt lə-ḇa-ʿă-šāʾ} ‘the one belonging to Baasha who dies’ introduces a subject relative clause. The locative baʿîr {בָּעִ֔יר | bā-ʿîr} ‘in the city’ sets the first scene, followed by yokhelu {יֹֽאכְל֖וּ | yōʾə-ḵə-lū} ‘they will eat’ in an imperfect conveying impending action as the apodosis of a prophetic oracle. The conjunction wə- then introduces the parallel clause wəhamet lo bassādeh {וְהַמֵּ֥ת לוֹ֙ בַּשָּׂדֶ֔ה | wə-ha-mēt lō bā-śā-deh} ‘and the one belonging to him who dies in the field,’ contrasting urban and rural domains. The repeated yokhelu governs the compound noun phrase ʿop haššāmayim {ע֥וֹף הַשָּׁמָֽיִם | ʿōp ha-šā-mā-yim} ‘birds of the heavens,’ creating a parallel structure that emphasizes comprehensive judgment and the theme of dishonor through exposure.
