Exegesis

The verse opens with the formula chai YHWH Eloheikha {חַי יְהוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ | ḥay Yə-hō-wāh ʾĕlōhêk̠ā} ‘as the LORD your God lives,’ which functions as a solemn oath.
