The opening vav-consecutive way-yō-mer {וַיֹּאמֶר | way-yō-mer} “and he said” introduces the objection by hā-ʿām {הָעָם | hā-ʿām} “the people” addressed to ʾel-Šā’ûl {אֶל־שָׁאוּל | ʾel-šā’ûl} “Saul.”
