1 And there was a certain man from Ramathaim, of the Zuphites {tzofim: clan affiliation} of the hill country of Ephraim, and his name was Elkanah, the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephrathite {ephrati: tribal identity}.
2 And he had two wives {nashim: married women}; one named Hannah, and the other named Peninnah. And to Peninnah were children {yeladim: offspring}, but to Hannah there were none
3 And that man went up from his city year after year {yamimah: repeated pilgrimage} to worship and to sacrifice to the LORD {YHWH Tsvaot, Commander of Heavenly Armies} at Shiloh, and there the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were priests to the LORD.
4 And the day came, and Elkanah sacrificed {zavach: ritual offering}, and he gave portions {manot: meat shares} to Peninnah, his wife, and to all her sons and her daughters
5 And to Hannah he gave a double portion because he loved Hannah, and the LORD {YHWH, Covenant-Keeper} had shut her womb {rachmah: reproductive organ}.
6 And her rival also provoked {khi’assattah: relentless provocation} her severely, in order to distress her, because the LORD {YHWH, Giver of Life} had closed her womb.
7 And so year after year {shanah be-shanah: continual succession}, whenever she went up to the house of the LORD {YHWH, Covenant-Keeper}, her rival would provoke her, and she wept and did not eat.
8 And Elkanah, her husband, said to her, “Hannah, why are you weeping{tivki: expression of sorrow}? And why do you not eat? And why is your heart{levav: inner thoughts} troubled? Am I not better for you than ten sons?”
9 And Hannah arose after they had eaten in Shiloh and after they had drunk, and Eli the priest was sitting on the seat by the doorpost {mezuzat: threshold pillar} of the temple of the LORD {YHWH, Righteous Judge}.
10 And she was bitter {marat: inner anguish idiom} in her soul and prayed to the LORD {YHWH, Hearing Intercessor} and wept, weeping.
11 And she made a vow {neder: binding pledge} and said, “LORD of hosts {YHWH Sabaoth, Divine Warrior}, if You look upon the affliction of Your maidservant and remember me, and do not forget Your maidservant, but give her a male offspring, then I will give him to the LORD for all the days of his life, and no razor shall come upon his head.”
12 And it came to pass, as she continued praying before the LORD {YHWH, Divine Hearer}, that Eli {Eli: priestly overseer} was watching her mouth.
13 And Hannah was speaking {medabberet: inward expression} in her heart; only her lips were moving, but her voice was not heard. And Eli thought she was intoxicated {shikhorah: impaired by wine}.
14 Then Eli said to her, “How long will you remain drunk {tishtakkarin: persist in intoxication}? Put away your wine {yeinekh: fermented beverage} from upon you.”
15 Then Hannah answered and said, “No, my lord, I am a woman hard of spirit {qeshat-ruach: emotionally burdened}, and I have not drunk wine or strong drink; rather, I have poured out my soul before the LORD {YHWH, Divine Covenant Keeper}.”
16 Do not regard your maidservant {amataxa: personal dependent} as a worthless woman, for out of the abundance of my complaint and my vexation {ka’asi: intense indignation} I have spoken until now.
17 And Eli answered and said, “Go in peace, and the God of Israel {Elohei Yisrael, Divine Protector} will give your request {sheilatekh: heartfelt petition} which you have asked from Him.”
18 And she said, “May your servant find favor {khen: gracious acceptance} in your eyes,” and the woman went on her way, and she ate; and her face was no longer downcast {panim: dejected expression}.
19 And they rose early in the morning and worshiped before the LORD {YHWH, Sovereign Lord}, then they returned and came to their home at Ramah. Elkanah knew his wife Hannah, and the LORD {YHWH, Faithful Rememberer} remembered her.
20 And it came to pass at the appointed seasons {tekufot: Set Times} that Hannah conceived and bore a son. She called his name Samuel, for she said, “I have asked him from the LORD {YHWH, Sovereign Giver}.”
21 And the man Elkanah and all his household went up to sacrifice to the LORD {YHWH, Covenant Partner} the yearly sacrifice and his vow {nidro: solemn pledge}.
22 And Hannah did not go up, for she said to her husband, “Until the boy is weaned {yigamel: End of Nursing}, I will bring him, and he will appear before the LORD {YHWH, Covenant-Keeper}, and he will dwell there forever.”
23 And Elkanah said to his wife, “Do what is good {tov: appropriate choice} in your eyes; stay until you have weaned him. Only may the LORD {YHWH, Promise Keeper} establish His word.” And the woman stayed and nursed her son until she weaned him.
24 And she brought him up with her, just as she had weaned him, with three bulls, one ephah of flour, and a skin of wine; then she brought him to the house of the LORD {YHWH, Sanctuary Keeper} at Shiloh, and the boy was a youth {na‘ar: boy/youth}.
25 And they slaughtered the bull {par: sacrificial animal}, and they brought the boy {na'ar: young attendant} to Eli
26 And she said to him, “By your life, my lord, I am the woman who stood {hanitzévet: consistent presence} here with you, praying to the LORD {YHWH, Hearer of Prayers}.”
27 I prayed {hitpalalti: sustained petition} to the LORD {YHWH, Gracious Answerer} for this boy, and He granted me the request which I asked of Him.
28 And also I have dedicated him to the LORD {YHWH, Covenant Keeper} for as long as he lives he is lent {sha’ul: passive dedication} to the LORD, and he worshiped the LORD there.
