Exegesis
The conditional wᵊʾimtirṣē lāqqāḥ ʾōṯāh {וְאִם־תִּרְצֶה לָקַח אֹתָהּ | wᵊʾimtirṣē lāqqāḥ ʾōṯāh} ‘and if you want, take it’ issues an invitation, and the existential ʾēn cha-REV pô {אֵין חָרֵב פֹּה | ʾēn ḥārēḇ pô} ‘there is no sword here’ contrasts with ʾāḇāl hārəqem hîʾāh {אֲבָל הָרֶקֶם הִיא | ʾāḇāl hārəqem hîʾāh} ‘but that one is,’ confirming exclusivity.
Following this, a second vav-consecutive wayyōmer {וַיֹּאמֶר | wayyōmer} marks David’s reply, where ʾēn kemōhāh lāzōth {אֵין כְּמוֹהָּ לָזֹאת | ʾēn kemōhāh lāzōth} expresses uniqueness and tənēh lī {תְּנֵה לִי | tənēh lī} issues a request for possession.
In context — 1 Samuel 21:9
And the priest said, “Behold , the sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom you killed in the Valley of Elah, is wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod . If you will take it, take it, for there is no other sword here.” And David said, “There is none like it; give it to me.”
