Exegesis

The verse consists of a chain of vav-consecutive clauses that drive the narrative forward: vayaqam {וַיָּקָם | va-ya-qām} “and arose” initiates David’s departure, followed by vayyetzeu {וַיֵּצְאוּ | va-yē-ṣə-ʾû} “and they went out” and vayithallechu {וַיִּתְהַלְּכוּ | va-yit-hal-lə-ḵû} “and they wandered,” both in the Hitpael imperfect to indicate reflexive or ongoing movement.
