2 Kings 16:15ExegesisTAB

2 Kings 16 : 15 Command | Sacrifice | Inquiry
15. Linguistic Exegesis
The vav-consecutive vayetzaveh {וַיְצַוֶּ֣ה | wayyəṣṣawwéh} ‘and he commanded’ introduces a direct royal instruction. The infinitive construct lēʾmōr {לֵאמֹ֗ר | lēʾmōr} ‘saying’ transitions into a Hiphil imperative sequence, with haqqəṭēr {הַקְטֵ֣ר | haqqəṭēr} ‘offer up’ governing a series of construct-chain nouns such as ʾōlaṯ-habbōqer {עֹלַת־הַבֹּקֶר֩ | ʾōlaṯ-habbōqer} ‘burnt offering of the morning.’ The repeated direct-object marker ʾet {אֶת־ | ʾet} and its conjunction wə-ʾet {וְאֶת־ | wə-ʾet} create a rhythmic litany of offerings. Finally, the imperfect yihyēh-lî {יִֽהְיֶה־לִּ֖י | yihyēh-lî} ‘shall be for me’ plus the infinitive lə-baqqēr {לְבַקֵּֽר | lə-baqqēr} sets a purpose for the bronze altar, rendered “shall be for me to inquire” in the English.
