The verse strings together actions with vav-consecutive verbs (vayimasu {וַיִּמְאֲסוּ} ‘and they rejected’ → vayelchu {וַיֵּלְכוּ} ‘and they walked’ → vayehbalu {וַיֶּהְבָּלוּ} ‘and they became empty’) to portray a downward spiral.
