Exegesis

A successive vav-consecutive hiphil verb hiphil {וַיְסִרֵם | way·yə·sî·rêm} ‘causative expulsion’ frames God’s action to remove the people, and the spatial metaphor meʿal panav with meʿal {מֵעַל | mē·ʿal} ‘from above’ and panav {פָּנָיו | pā·nāw} ‘presence’ indicates removal from divine presence.
