After the Niphal perfect neesfusham {נֶאֶסְפוּ־שָׁם | ne-ʾes-pû-šām} ‘they were gathered there’, the vav consecutive vayaalu {וַּיַעֲלוּ | va-ya-ʿă-lû} ‘and they went up’ describes the retreat of ish {אִישׁ | ʾîš} and yisrael {יִשְׂרָאֵֽל | yiś-rā-ʾēl}.
