The verse opens with the genitive absolute construction touto de autou lalountos {τοῦτο δὲ αὐτοῦ λαλοῦντος | toû-to dè autoû laloûn-tos} “but as he was speaking this,” which supplies a temporal and circumstantial frame independent of the main clause.
