Exegesis

The verse opens with the relative clause ho kai epoiesa {ὃ καὶ ἐποίησα | hó kaì epoíēsa} “which also I did,” linking Paul’s actions in Jerusalem back to his previous statement and presenting them as a concrete example.

The sequence kai pollous te ton hagion ego en phylakais katekleisa {καὶ πολλούς τε τῶν ἁγίων ἐγὼ ἐν φυλακαῖς κατέκλεισα | kaì polloús te tôn hagíōn egṓ en phylakaîs katékleisa} places pollous “many” before the genitive ton hagion “of the saints” for emphasis on the number, while the explicit ego highlights Paul’s personal responsibility. The main finite verb katekleisa gathers the preceding elements into the primary assertion: he imprisoned many holy ones.
