17. Formal Translation
Having hoisted the boat, they applied supports beneath the hull to undergird the vessel; and, fearing they might run aground on the Syrtis, they lowered the gear, and so they were driven along.
17. Dynamic Translation
Once they lifted it aboard, they passed ropes under the hull to strengthen it. Then, fearing they would run onto the Syrtis, they lowered the sea anchor, and so the vessel drifted on.
