The verse opens with the conditional phrase ei de ek theou estin {εἰ δὲ ἐκ θεοῦ ἐστιν | ei de ek theou estin} ‘but if it is from God’, where the postpositive de links Gamaliel’s remark to the preceding debate and ei introduces a protasis.
