Exegesis
The narrative then advances by way of wəʾāmar {וְאָמַר | wə-ʾā-mar} ‘and he said,’ introducing direct speech marked by a string of second person masculine plural imperatives gūddû {גּוּדּוּ | gūd-dû} ‘hew down,’ wəḥabbəlûhî {וְחַבְּלוּהִי | wə-ḥab-bə-lû-hî} ‘and destroy it,’ and šəvuqqû {שְׁבֻקוּ | šə-vuq-qû} ‘leave,’ addressed to the heavenly agents who are to carry out the decree.
In context — Daniel 4:23
And that the king saw a watcher and a holy one coming down from heaven, and he said, “Hew down the tree and destroy it, yet leave the stump with its roots in the earth, with a band of iron and bronze in the tender grass of the field, and let it be wet with the dew of heaven, and let its portion be with the beasts of the field, until seven times pass over him.”
