12. Formal Translation Then these presidents and satraps came before the king regarding the interdict, “O king, did you not sign a decree that anyone who petitions any god or man within thirty days—except you, O king—shall be cast into the den of lions?” The king answered and said, “The interdict stands according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which cannot be revoked.” |
12. Dynamic Translation They approached the king to report on the decree, “Your Majesty, did you not sign a decree that anyone who petitions a god or a person within thirty days—apart from you, O king—will be thrown into the lions’ den?” The king replied, “It is established by the law of the Medes and Persians and cannot be undone.” |
