Deuteronomy 20:10ExegesisTAB

Deuteronomy 20 : 10 Peace | Warfare | Negotiation
10. Linguistic Exegesis
The verse begins with the conjunction ki {כִּי | kî} introducing a conditional action. The imperfect verb tiqrav {תִקְרַב | tiqrav} signals future-oriented drawing near. The prepositional phrase el-ir {אֶל־עִיר | ʾel–ʿîr} designates the city as the object. The Niphal infinitive lehilakhem {לְהִלָּחֵם | lə-hillāḥêm} serves as a purpose clause “to fight,” qualified by the suffix aleha {עָלֶיהָ | ʿāleyhā}. The coordinating veqarata {וְקָרָאתָ | wə-qārāṯā} introduces the command to call, again directed by eleha {אֵלֶיהָ | ʾêleyhā}. The noun leshalom {לְשָׁלוֹם | lə-šālôm} states the content “for peace,” linking the decree to covenantal restoration. English preserves the protasis–apodosis structure with “shall” and maintains the sequence of purpose and imperative.
