   When you lay siege against a city for days many to fight against it to capture it you shall not destroy its trees by wielding {to wield} against it an axe for from it you may eat and it not you shall cut for the man a tree of the field to come before you in the siege

Exegesis

The final clause contrasts hā-’ā-dām {הָאָדָם | hā-’ā-dām} with ʿêṣ ha-ṣādeh {עֵץ הַשָּׂדֶה | ʿêṣ ha-ṣādeh} in a rhetorical question, emphasizing human life does not deserve the same treatment as trees in a siege.
