Deuteronomy 20:3ExegesisTAB

Deuteronomy 20 : 3 Courage | Battle | Fear
3. Linguistic Exegesis
The verse begins with the vav-consecutive form ve'amar {וְאָמַר | wə-ʾā-mar} ‘and he shall say’ introducing reported speech directed at the troops. The summons shema {שְׁמַע | šə-maʿ} ‘hear’ paired with the vocative yisrael {יִשְׂרָאֵל | yi-srā-ʾēl} establishes a formal call to attention. The pronoun atem {אַתֶּם | ʾa-tem} ‘you’ and the participle kerevim {קְרֵבִים | qə-re-vîm} ‘are drawing near’ together with the temporal marker hayom {הַיּוֹם | ha-yôm} situate the audience at the threshold of la-milchamah {לַמִּלְחָמָה | la-mil-ḥā-māh} ‘the battle’ against al-oyveichem {עַל־אֹיְבֵיכֶם | ʿal-ʼô-vê-chem} ‘your enemies.’ The sequence of four negatives (al-yerakh, al-tireu, ve-al-tachpezu, ve-al-taartzū) intensifies the exhortation by addressing levavkhem {לְבַבְכֶם | le-vav-khem} ‘your inner resolve’ and emotional reactions, all framed mipneihēm {מִּפְנֵיהֶם | mip-pə-nē-hēm} ‘from before them.’ The Hebrew’s repetitive imperatives create a rhythmic urgency that the English rendering preserves.
