Ezekiel 17:23ExegesisTAB

Ezekiel 17 : 23 Planting | Growth | Shelter
23. Linguistic Exegesis
The verse opens with the first-person future verb eshtolennu {אֶשְׁתֳּלֶ֔נּוּ | ’ĕš-tō-lə-nnû} ‘I will plant it’, establishing divine agency. The geographic phrase behar merom yisra’el {בְּהַר מְר֤וֹם יִשְׂרָאֵל | bə-hár mə-rōm yis-rā-ʼēl} ‘on the high mountain of Israel’ functions as spatial emphasis, highlighting elevation and centrality. A sequence of perfect verbs—venasa anaf {וְנָשָׂא עָנָף | wə-nā-śāʼ ʿā-nāp} ‘it will send forth a branch’, ve’asa peri {וְעָשָׂה פֶרִי | wə-ʿā-sāh pē-rī} ‘and make fruit’, vehayah le’erez addir {וְהָיָה לְאֶרֶז אַדִּיר | wə-hā-yāh lə-ʾē-rēz ’aḏ-ḏîr} ‘and it will become a mighty cedar’—creates a stepwise portrayal of growth and transformation. The collective dwelling clause veshachenu tachtav kol tsippor kol-kanaph {וְשָׁכְנוּ תַּחְתָּיו צִפּוֹר כָּל־כָּנָף | wə-šaḵ-nû taḥ-tāw ṣip-pôr kōl-kā-nāp} ‘all birds of every wing will dwell under it’ employs repetition and parallelism to stress inclusivity. The final phrase betsel daliyyotav tishkenah {בְּצֵל דָּלִיּוֹתָיו תִּשְׁכֹּנָּה | bə-ṣél dā-lî-yō-tāw tiš-kō-nāh} ‘in the shade of its branches they will nest’ uses construct-state shading for protective imagery. English rendering preserves the Hebrew sequence and parallel structure to maintain emphasis and unity of the promise.
