Exegesis

The purpose clause lemaʿan lo-yishama kolo od el-harei yisrael {לְמַעַן לֹא־יִשָּׁמַ֥ע קוֹל֛וֹ ע֖וֹד אֶל־הָרֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ | lə-maʿan lōʾ-yiššāmaʿ qōlô ʿōḏ ʾel-hārê yiśrāʾēl} ‘so that his voice would no longer be heard on the mountains of Israel’ uses the negative particle lo with the Nifal imperfect to express irrevocable silencing. The construct chain hārê yiśrāʾēl ‘mountains of Israel’ fuses geography with national identity. The translation preserves the Hebrew paratactic structure and maintains the thematic emphasis on complete defeat.
