Genesis 17:8ExegesisTAB

Genesis 17 : 8 Inheritance | Promise | Permanence
8. Linguistic Exegesis
The verse begins with venatati {וְנָתַתִּי | wə-nā-ṯat-tî} ‘and I will give’, a Qal perfect with prefixed vav that conveys future covenant promise. The coordinated recipients lekha {לְךָ | lə-ḵā} ‘to you’ and ulezarakha {וּלְזַרְעֲךָ | û-lə-zar-ʿă-ḵā} ‘and to your descendants’ extend the grant to Abraham’s seed. Achareikha {אַחֲרֶיךָ | ʾa-ḥa-rê-ḵā} ‘after you’ broadens the scope beyond the first generation. Et {אֵת | ʾēt} marks the direct object erets megurekha {אֶרֶץ מְגֻרֶיךָ | ʾe-reṣ mə-gu-rê-ḵā} ‘land of your sojournings’, emphasizing transient dwelling. A second et introduces kol-erets kena‘an {כָּל־אֶרֶץ כְּנַעַן | kol-ʾe-reṣ kə-na-ʿan} ‘all the land of Canaan’, with kol intensifying totality. The legal-temporal clause la'achuzat olam {לַאֲחֻזַּת עוֹלָם | la-ʾa-ḥuz-zat ʿô-lām} fuses hereditary tenure with enduring duration. The covenant declaration vehayiti lahem le'elohim {וְהָיִיתִי לָהֶם לֵאלֹהִים | wə-hā-yî-ṯî lā-hem lē-ʾĕ-lō-hîm} ‘and I will be to them for God’ asserts a defining relational bond. The English rendering preserves the dual recipients, coordinated objects, temporal construct, and reciprocal covenant promise.
