Exegesis

The conditional protasis we-im-enkha meshiv {וְאִם־אֵינְךָ מֵשִׁיב | wə-ʾim-ʾên-ḵā mē-šîḇ} ‘and if you do not return’ sets up the warning, followed by the imperative da {דַּע | daʿ} ‘know’ introducing the apodosis ki-mot tamut {כִּי־מֹות תָּמוּת | kî-môṯ tā-mûṯ} ‘that you shall surely die.’
