Exegesis

The verse begins with vehaam {וְהָעָם | wə-hā-ʿām} ‘and the people,’ which is defined by the relative clause asher hemmah nibbeim lahem {אֲשֶׁר־הֵמָּה נִבְּאִים לָהֶם | ʾă-šer-hēm-māh nib-be-ʾîm lā-hem} ‘to whom they are prophesying,’ marking them as passive recipients of the message.

The negative existential ve-ein meqabber lahemmah {וְאֵין מְקַבֵּר לָהֵמָּה | wə-ʾên mə-qa-bber lā-hēm-māh} ‘and there is no one to bury them’ underscores total abandonment.

In contextJeremiah 14:16

And the people to whom they prophesy will be cast out in the streets of Jerusalem because of the famine and the sword, with none to bury them—their wives, their sons, or their daughters. And I will pour out upon them their evil .
