Exegesis
A series of waw-prefixed wayyiqtol verbs—vayelchu {וַיֵּלְכוּ | wə-ya-le-ḵû} ‘and they went,’ vayaavdum {וַיַּעַבְד֖וּם | wə-ya-ʿa-ḇə-ḏum} ‘and they served them,’ and vayishtachavu {וַיִּשְׁתַּחֲו֣וּ | wə-yiš-ta-ḥă-vû} ‘and they bowed down’—depicts progressive idolatry.
In context — Jeremiah 16:11
And you shall say to them, “Because your fathers have forsaken Me,” declares the LORD , “and have gone after other gods, and have served and bowed down to them; but Me they have forsaken, and My law they have not kept.”
