Jeremiah 17:4ExegesisTAB

Jeremiah 17 : 4 Inheritance | Exile | Wrath
4. Linguistic Exegesis
The verse opens with a vav-consecutive perfect veshamatta {וְשָׁמַטְתָּ | wə-šā-maṭ-tā} ‘and you shall release’ followed by uvekha {וּבְךָ | û-ḇə-ḵā} ‘and in you’ as an intensifier. A construct phrase minnachalatekha {מִנַּחֲלָתְךָ | min-na-ḥă-laṯ-ḵā} “from your inheritance” is grounded by natatti {נָתַתִּי | nā-taṯ-tî} ‘I have given.’ The Hiphil perfect vehaavadtikha {וְהַעֲבַדְתִּיךָ | wə-ha-ʿă-ḇad-tî-ḵā} ‘and I will make you serve’ introduces compelled servitude, with et-oyevekha {אֶת־אֹיְבֶיךָ | ʾeṯ-ʾō-ye-ḇe-ḵā} marking the object. The relative clause asher loyadata {אֲשֶׁר לֹא־יָדָעְתָּ | ʾă-šer lō-yā-ḏaʿ-tā} modifies baaretz {בָּאָרֶץ | bā-ʾā-reṣ}, emphasizing exile’s unfamiliarity. The conjunction ki {כִּי | kî} introduces esh kedakhtem {אֵשׁ קְדַחְתֶּם | ʾēš qə-daḥ-tem} ‘fire you have kindled,’ and the Nifal imperfect tukad {תּוּקָד | tû-qāḏ} ‘it shall burn’ with adolam {עַד־עוֹלָם | ʿad-ʿō-lām} ‘forever’ conveys perpetual judgment. The sequence underscores divine retribution through dispossession, exile, and unending fire.
