Exegesis

The participle ha-omrim {הָאֹמְרִים | hā-ʾōm-rîm} introduces the addressee’s arrogant questions, using the interrogative mi-yechat {מִי־יֵחַת | mî-yē-ḥat} ‘who will descend’ with aleinu {עָלֵינוּ | ʿā-lē-nû} ‘upon us,’ followed by u-mi {וּמִי | û-mî} ‘and who’ plus yavo {יָב֖וֹא | yā-ḇōʾ} ‘will enter’ with bime'onoteinu {בִּמְעוֹנוֹתֵינוּ | bi-mə-ʿō-nō-ṯê-nû} ‘in our dwellings.’ The rhetorical structure highlights irony: despite their boast of impregnable terraces, YHWH’s opposition overturns their confidence.
