Each clause presents funeral exclamations: hōy ʾāḥi {ה֥וֹי אָחִ֖י | hōy ʾāḥî} “alas, my brother” and wə-hōy ʾāḥōt {וְה֣וֹי אָח֑וֹת | wə-hōy ʾāḥōt} “and alas, sister” in the first clause, and hōy ʾāḏōn {ה֥וֹי אָד֖וֹן | hōy ʾāḏōn} “alas, lord” and wə-hōy hōḏō {וְה֥וֹי הֹדֹֽה | wə-hōy hōḏō} “and alas, his majesty” in the second. The parallel structure and repeated lament formulas underscore the king’s dishonor by negating customary mourning.
