Exegesis

The final clause ve-dam naqi al-tishpeḵu ba-maqom hazzeh {וְדָ֣ם נָקִי אַֽל־תִּשְׁפְּכ֖וּ בַּמָּק֥וֹם הַזֶּֽה | wə-ḏām nā-qî ʾal-tiš-pə-ḵû ba-mā-qôm haz-zeh} concludes with an absolute ban on shedding innocent blood. The English rendering preserves Hebrew parallelism and emphatic negatives while clarifying the ethical urgency.

In contextJeremiah 22:3

Thus says the LORD : "Do justice and righteousness, and deliver the one who has been robbed from the hand of the oppressor. Do not oppress or do violence to the sojourner, the orphan , or the widow, and do not shed innocent blood in this place."
