Jonah 1:13:1וַיַּחְתְּר֣וּvayakhteruand they dug through, that is, they rowed hard
Jonah 1:13:2הָאֲנָשִׁ֗יםhaanashimthe men Jonah 1:13:3לְהָשִׁ֛יבlehashivto bring back, to return Jonah 1:13:4אֶל־הַיַּבָּשָׁ֖הelhayabbashato the dry land Jonah 1:13:5וְלֹ֣אveloand not Jonah 1:13:6יָכֹ֑לוּyakholuthey were able, they could Jonah 1:13:7כִּ֣יkifor, because Jonah 1:13:8הַיָּ֔םhayamthe sea Jonah 1:13:9הוֹלֵ֥ךְholekhgoing, continually going Jonah 1:13:10וְסֹעֵ֖רvesoerand storming, and raging Jonah 1:13:11עֲלֵיהֶֽם׃alehemagainst them, upon them
13. Formal Translation
Yet the men rowed to turn back toward the dry land, but they were not able, because the sea was pressing forward and storming against them.
13. Dynamic Translation
Even so, the men strained to get back to land, but they were unable, because the sea kept bearing down and raging against them.
