The verse opens with two sequential wayyiqtol clauses, vayitpallel {וַיִּתְפַּלֵּ֨ל | way-yit-pal-lēl} ‘and he prayed’ followed by vayomer {וַיֹּאמַ֗ר | way-yōmar} ‘and he said,’ moving from action to direct speech and marking Jonah’s prayer as a protest.
