6. Formal Translation Then they said to him, “Say now ‘Shibboleth.’” He replied “Sibboleth,” for he could not manage to articulate it properly. So they seized him and slaughtered him at the fords of the Jordan. In that time, forty-two thousand Ephraimites fell. |
6. Dynamic Translation They challenged him, “Now say ‘Shibboleth’.” When he said “Sibboleth,” because he could not say it accurately, they grabbed him and executed him at the river crossings of the Jordan. During that period, forty-two thousand from Ephraim died. |
