Exegesis

The content introduced by peri tōn Galilaion {περὶ τῶν Γαλιλαίων | perì tṓn Galilaíōn} ‘about the Galileans’ is further defined by the genitive relative clause hon to haima Pilatos emixen meta tōn thusion auton {ὧν τὸ αἷμα Πιλᾶτος ἔμιξεν μετὰ τῶν θυσιῶν αὐτῶν}, linking the group to the atrocity. The verb emixen ‘had mixed’ takes haima ‘blood’ as its object and meta tōn thusion auton ‘with their sacrifices’ indicates association. Pilatos placed between haima and emixen highlights him as the agent of the violent act. In English the aorist is rendered in the simple past to convey completed action prior to the report.
