Exegesis

The participial phrase tēs anastaseos huioi ontes {τῆς ἀναστάσεως υἱοὶ ὄντες | tês anastáseōs huioí óntes} ‘being sons of the resurrection’ further qualifies huioi, most naturally as a causal or explanatory participle: they are sons of God because they are characterized as “sons belonging to the resurrection.” The English renderings preserve the causal and explanatory force by using “for” and “because,” maintain the parallelism of the predicate nominatives (“equal to angels” / “sons of God”), and retain the participial nuance with “being …” to show that their immortal, angel-like status arises from their participation in the resurrection.
