Proverbs 24:13ExegesisTAB

Proverbs 24 : 13 Wisdom | Goodness | Delight
13. Linguistic Exegesis
The proverb opens with ekhal {אֱכָל | ʾĕ-kā-l} ‘eat’, an imperative addressing b’ni {בְּנִי | bə-nî} ‘my son’, establishing direct fatherly exhortation. The coordination of d’vash {דְבַשׁ | de-vaš} ‘honey’ with the explanatory clause ki-tov {כִּי־ט֑וֹב | kî-ṭôv} ‘for it is good’ uses parataxis to link the object and its commendation. A second coordinated noun phrase, venofet {וְנֹפֶת | wə-nō-p̄eṯ} ‘and honeycomb’, is modified by matok {מָ֝ת֗וֹק | mā-tōq} ‘sweet’, and the prepositional phrase al-chikekha {עַל־חִכֶּֽךָ | ʿal-ḥi-kke-ḵā} ‘upon your palate’ indicates locus. The absence of subordinating conjunctions heightens immediacy and vivid sensory appeal. In translation, retaining the paratactic “for” mirrors Hebrew ki’s explanatory function, while “upon your palate” preserves the bodily metaphor central to the proverb’s imagery.
