Exegesis

The next clause kai tas psychas tôn pepelekismenōn {καὶ τὰς ψυχὰς τῶν πεπελεκισμένων | kaí tàs psy-chàs tôn pe-pe-le-ki-sme-nôn} “and the souls of those who had been beheaded” identifies the martyrs, with dia tēn martyrían Iēsoû {διὰ τὴν μαρτυρίαν Ἰησοῦ | diá tēn mar-tu-rí-an Iē-soû} and dia ton lógon toû theou {διὰ τὸν λόγον τοῦ θεοῦ | diá ton ló-gon toû the-oû} functioning as causal prepositional phrases linking their death to witness and fidelity.

In contextRevelation 20:4

And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given to them. And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded because of the testimony of Jesus and because of the word of God , and also those who had not worshiped the beast nor its image, and had not received the mark on their forehead and on their hand; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.
