A second conditional clause appears with ean de apothanē ho anēr {ἐάν δὲ ἀποθάνῃ ὁ ἀνήρ | e-an dé a-po-thánē ho a-nḗr} ‘but if the husband dies’, leading to the declarative eleuthera estin apo tou nomou {ἐλευθέρα ἐστὶν ἀπὸ τοῦ νόμου | e-leu-thé-ra es-tín a-pó toû nó-mou} ‘she is free from the law,’ which denotes her changed legal status.
